Lesson 41 Do you call that a hat?

What kind of shopping does the writer enjoy,do you think?

‘Do you call that a hat？’I said to my wife.

‘You needn't be so rude about it,’my wife answered as she looked at herself in

the mirror.

I sat down on one of those modern chairs with holes in it and waited. We had

been in the hat shop for half an hour and my wife was still in front of the mirror.

‘We must't buy things we don't need,’I remarked suddenly.I regretted saying

it almost at once.

‘You needn't have said that,’my wife answered.‘I needn't remind you of that

terrible tie you bought yesterday.’

‘I find it beautiful,’I said.‘A man can never have too many ties.’

‘And a woman can't have too hats,’she answered.

Ten minutes later we walked out of the shop together.My wife was wearing a

hat that looked like a lighthouse!

1 ...needn't be so rude...,英語(yǔ)中實(shí)際上有兩個(gè)need.一個(gè)是普通動(dòng)詞need;另一個(gè)是情態(tài)動(dòng)詞need.情態(tài)動(dòng)詞的need 和can,may 等情態(tài)動(dòng)詞一樣，后接動(dòng)詞原形，但只用于否定和疑問(wèn)句，肯定句用must,have to,ought to 或should.

2 I regretted saying ...,regret 后接動(dòng)名詞表示對(duì)所做過(guò)的事感到遺憾。

3 We mustn't buy things we don't need.我們不應(yīng)該買(mǎi)我們不需要的東西。句中的need

是普通動(dòng)詞，當(dāng)“需要”講。

4 You needn't have said that...

need't have done表示本來(lái)用不著做某事，而實(shí)際上已經(jīng)做了。

5 I need't remind you of that terrible tie you bought yesterday.我也不必提醒你昨天買(mǎi)

的那條糟糕透了的領(lǐng)帶。remind sb.of sth.是“提醒某人想起某事”的意思。

6 I find it beartiful,我覺(jué)得它好看。句中的beautiful用來(lái)補(bǔ)充說(shuō)明賓語(yǔ)it,在語(yǔ)法上稱(chēng)作賓語(yǔ)補(bǔ)足語(yǔ)。

7 A man can never have too many ties.男人有多少領(lǐng)帶也不會(huì)嫌多。

參考譯文

“你把那個(gè)叫帽子嗎？”我對(duì)妻子說(shuō)。

“你說(shuō)話(huà)沒(méi)必要這樣不客氣，”我的妻子邊回答邊照著鏡子。

我坐在一個(gè)新式的滿(mǎn)是網(wǎng)眼兒的椅子上，等待著。我們?cè)谶@家帽店已經(jīng)呆了半個(gè)小時(shí)了，而我的妻子仍在鏡子面前。

“我們不應(yīng)該買(mǎi)我們不需要的東西，”我突然發(fā)表意見(jiàn)，但馬上又后悔說(shuō)了這話(huà)。

“你沒(méi)必要這么說(shuō)，”我妻子回答說(shuō)，“我也不必提醒你昨天買(mǎi)的那條糟糕透了的領(lǐng)帶。”

“我覺(jué)得它好看，”我說(shuō)，“男人有多少領(lǐng)帶也不會(huì)嫌多。”

“女人有多少帽子也不嫌多。”她回答。

10分鐘以后，我們一道走出了商店。我妻子戴著一頂像燈塔一樣的帽子。
